Get 3D mammography at MSU Women's Imaging Center, staffed by board certified radiologists and technologists. 3D mammography, or Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT), is one of the latest technological innovations in women’s healthcare. It enables images of the whole breast to be taken in slices, helping your doctor see in between the breast tissues to search for possible abnormalities. 

Why 3D mammography?

We have added 3D imaging  to our current state-of-the-art 2D digital mammography. This new technology helps to see between overlapping breast tissue and is beneficial for patients with dense breasts. Studies show 3D mammograms increase detection of cancer and reduce callbacks for additional imaging.

How does it work?

Similar to a standard mammogram. During the exposure, the X-ray tube moves to capture multiple images of the breast from different angles. Reconstructing these images in 3D enables doctors to see all around and between the breast tissues to help perform an accurate analysis.

How does it compare to a 2D mammogram?

The two are similar. 3D mammography is carried out with the same degree of compression, and may only take a few seconds longer to acquire the images. Both 2D and 3D mammography provide excellent image quality for a radiologist’s interpretation.

How often should a patient get a 3D mammogram?

The recommended frequency of screening examinations remains the same as for 2D examinations.
